Hold Me Thrice: 3×20 Hug Challenge
Let’s pump up your oxytocin this week!
Oxytocin is often referred to as the ‘love hormone’ or ‘bonding chemical’ because when it is released it makes us feel loved, safe & connected.
A simple way to release a flood of oxytocin is hugging your partner for 20 seconds. As a side bonus studies suggest frequent hugs are linked to lower blood pressure and heart rate - double win!
Chat with your significant other about giving this challenge a try for the next 7 days.
Simple pattern you can follow is:
a. 20 second hug in the morning after waking up / before leaving
b. 20 second hug when you two both are back at home in afternoon / evening
c. 20 second hug before one or both you get into bed
Give it a try and let me know what you discover :)
Personal Spark: Grow Your AMCC
Ever met one of those really disciplined people who eats well, exercises consistently, works hard etc and you wonder ‘how on earth are they doing this?’
Well, probably a lot of variables but they have definitely strengthened their AMCC.
There is a specific area of your brain called the anterior mid-cingulate cortex which grows bigger and stronger anytime you do something you DON’T want to do or resist a temptation.
The key factor here is ‘don’t want to do’. If someone loves exercising and goes to the gym - that will not strengthen their AMCC because they enjoy doing it. Now if they only like lifting weights and hate cardio, but force themselves to do 15 minutes on the treadmill… that will fire up their AMCC.
From The Dose Effect (new book I’m enjoying):
“With each activation of your AMCC, your willpower will get stronger. What’s interesting as this component of your brain gets stronger, your ability to maintain discipline gets easier.”
You don’t have to do crazy stuff either - little actions (that you don’t want to do) like making your bed, laundry, going for a walk etc all stack up and strengthen your AMCC.
Chat with your significant other and each of you come up with one thing you don’t want to do this week… then hold each other accountable to do it.
Woot woot I believe in you!
Connecting Conversations
“I never learn anything talking. I only learn things when I ask questions.”
~Lou Houltz
This weekend, try asking your significant other these over coffee:
What have you done in the last six months that you’re most proud of?
Give me one tip on how to please you in bed. Don’t hold back!
When I’m not with you, what’s the first thing you miss about me?
