Finding you & your partner's personality types

Fun questions to ask your significant other

Welcome to The Spark (by Hunter at Show Her Off Dance).

Every Thursday, I’m going to send you a quick, five-minute email with fun date night ideas, conversation starters, and resources to help strengthen your relationship.

My goal is to help you and your partner have more fun, feel more closely connected and create more meaningful memories together (just like with Date Night Dancing).

Now, without further ado, let’s dive in…

Connecting Conversations

Sometimes a great question is all you need to start a meaningful conversation :)

This weekend, try asking your significant other:

  • What's something you daydreamed about as a kid that you'd like to make a reality?

  • What day of the week describes me best and why?

  • If we could go on a trip anywhere in the world, where would you pick?

Have any questions that you’d suggest I include for future editions?

Reply to this email and let me know.

Date Night

With winter markets happening all over the country, I thought it would be fun to suggest a date night this week at one of these festive events!

Check your local events calendar to see if there’s a market near you this weekend.

The Winter Market Gift Game

  • Determine a budget before you begin (ie. $25 each).

  • Browse the market together, taking stock of what’s available.

  • Then split up so you can browse individually, specifying a meet up time and place.

  • Each of you then finds one item for the other. Things to think about:

    • What made you think of them when you saw this?

    • Why do you think they’ll like it?

    • Why did you pick this item over something else that you saw?

  • When you meet back up, each of you will show the other the item and share the answers to the questions above.

Gift giving is all about finding something special that shows you know the person you love. Often it matters less about what the gift actually is than about why you chose it for them.

This winter market game allows you both to show off how much you know about your partner, making them feel noticed and appreciated!

Bonus point: If it’s an item or on a theme they’ve mentioned recently, this shows them that you’re listening. 😉

If there are no winter markets near you, head to one of your favourite stores and play the game there.

You could also save the gift giving and discussion over dinner or coffee / drinks after you play the game :)

If you end up using the idea, reply to this email and let me know how it went!

The Love Lab

The Enneagram

One of the best tools I've come across to help me understand myself better (and relating to others) is the Enneagram.

Ever heard of it?

Per wikipedia:

“The Enneagram of Personality, or simply the Enneagram, is a model of the human psyche which is principally understood and taught as a typology of nine interconnected personality types”

Each “enneatype” number has a core motivation that influences the way a person acts, thinks and feels.

8's are the best number to be - heehee jk (I'm an 8w7). It’s not a number you get to pick, you already are one of them (based on your childhood) so the game is figuring out which one you are.

Determining your personality type can help you learn more about your motivations and the ways in which you interact and relate to others.

As an 8, for example, I have learned that other people may experience me as too direct or blunt, and intense (nonsense! I'm just speaking the truth lol).

This has been very helpful for me in having that awareness so I can regulate my communication style with others if it feels warranted.

The types are:

1. The Reformer

  • You are the rational and idealistic type.

2. The Helper

  • You are the caring and interpersonal type.

3. The Achiever

  • You are the success-oriented and pragmatic type.

4. The Individualist

  • You are the sensitive and withdrawn type.

5. The Investigator

  • You are the intense and cerebral type.

6. The Loyalist

  • You are the committed and security-oriented type.

7. The Enthusiast

  • You are the busy and fun-loving type.

8. The Challenger

  • You are the powerful and dominating type.

9. The Peacemaker

  • You are the easygoing and self-effacing type.

If you’d like to find out what type you are there is a quiz at The Enneagram Institute (and plenty of other free quizzes online).

It also has a simple resource you can use to find out some basics about how you and your partner’s personalities interact.

Have fun, but be careful... it can be a rabbit hole if you're into self development :)

That’s it for this week’s edition of The Spark :)

Put this edition’s ideas to work this weekend, and see first-hand how small, intentional acts can transform your relationship.

Keep the spark’s flying,
